HUMAN CLONING: THE FINAL CONFLICT
28-Nov-2001 -- EWTN Pro-Family News
Human Life International condemns all human cloning experimentation

(hli.org) - "The announcement of human embryo cloning accomplished by the Advanced Cell Technology company marks the beginning of the final conflict between the forces of life and the forces of death in this nation", stated Father Thomas Euteneuer, President of Human Life International, the world's largest pro-life, pro-faith and pro-family organization. "The man-made creation of human beings to serve the needs of those allowed to live is the most devastating act that could forever isolate mankind from God the Father."

On Sunday 25 November, the Advanced Cell Technology company in Massachusetts announced that it had been able to clone human embryos, although all have died. The cloned human embryo will be used for extraction of stem cells, which is known as 'therapeutic cloning'. Advanced Cell Technology denied that the cloned human embryo was a human life. On Monday 26 November, in a bizarre attempt to justify the unjustifiable, Michael West, President of Advanced Cell Technology, asserted on the NBC Today program that 'I consider myself pro-life…and I do not see this as a pro-life issue at all" Coincidentally, according to Debra Evans in her book Without Moral Limits, between 1938 and 1953, research on the human embryo for in vitro fertilization also began in Massachusetts at the privately funded Free Hospital for Women clinic, which was attached to the Harvard University Medical School. Massachusetts state law still recognizes that human life begins at conception.

In a press release issued on Tuesday 27 November, The Holy See reiterated its condemnation of human cloning experimentation and asserted that "(t)he principle…has been introduced, in the name of health ...(of)….discrimination among human beings based on the measure of time of their development…". In his book The Brave New World of Therapeutic Cloning, published by Human Life International, Eamonn Keane stated that "The immunity from prosecution afforded those who perpetuate violence against human beings…calls into question the nature of democracy as…currently practiced."

"Michael West and Advanced Cell Technology are not pro-life. I urge all Americans not to fall for the deceptive language of the forces of death. All forms of human cloning mark the final crossing over into national moral depravity. Human Life International condemns human cloning and calls on all pro-lifers in the United States and the world to defend the dignity of all conceived human beings, before it is too late", concluded Father Euteneuer.

POPE PERSONALLY CONDEMNS THERAPEUTIC CLONING

VATICAN, November 28, 2001 (LSN.ca) - After his General Audience today, Pope John Paul II personally condemned human therapeutic cloning in an address to a group of doctors. The Vatican condemned the US announcement on Monday.

"True humanism can never permit methods and experiments that constitute threats against life that are programmed in a scientific and systematic manner," he said. The Pope urged the doctors to "uncompromisingly defend life and the dignity of the human person and work within respect of moral law."

POPE'S FIRST INTERNET DOCUMENT CALLS FOR PROTECTION OF THE UNBORN

VATICAN CITY, November 22, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Pope John Paul II included a call for the defence of the unborn in the first document he has ever personally posted on the Internet. The pro-life message came in a document that summed up the themes of a synod of bishops from Oceania held in the Vatican in 1998.

The Pope wrote: "In the more secularized and affluent societies of Oceania, the right to life is the one most under threat. There is a profound contradiction in this, for these are often societies which speak insistently about human rights while denying the most basic right of all." He stressed, "the Church has to defend the right to life from the moment of conception until natural death, at every stage of its development."

Answering a common question of imposition of morality the Pope said, "It is not a question of the Church seeking to impose her morality on others, but rather of being faithful to her mission to share the full truth about life as taught by Jesus Christ. The promotion of the sacredness of life is a consequence of the Christian understanding of human existence. This message must be taught by the Church not only within the Catholic community but, in a prophetic way, to society as a whole in order to declare the power and beauty of the Gospel of life."

"Life must be promoted and its sanctity defended against every threat of violence in its many forms, especially violence against the weakest - the elderly, the dying, women, children, the disabled and the unborn," he said.

HLI ASK "WHO ARE THE REAL TERRORISTS IN AMERICA?"

HLI demands an apology from the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice 20-Nov-2001 -- EWTN Pro-Family News

(hli.org) - "The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice has defamed all people of faith in this nation that defend the right to life of the unborn citizens of America", stated Father Thomas Euteneuer, President of Human Life International, the world's largest pro-life, pro-faith and pro-family organization. "The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice has described pro-life supporters as 'anti-abortion zealots' who 'are certain God wants them to terrorize and even kill for their beliefs'. We demand an immediate apology for this slander".

The Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice has placed advertisements in their newspapers The Hill and Roll Call, which are read by political and federal government leaders in Washington, D.C., titled Bombs, Bullets and Anthrax, alleging that pro-abortionists have been "the victims of a relentless campaign of terror", and that pro-lifers act "in terms eerily like those of the Taliban and Osama bin Laden". Both ads ran on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 November.

This is the second round of attacks against pro-lifers by pro-abortionists, comparing them to the Taliban. On Monday 24 October, James Oberweis, the Illinois Republican candidate for the United States Senate, during the Steve Dahl Show radio program, explained that the reason he does not defend life is because "...the Taliban is the best example...". The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights demanded that he apologize for his remarks, and on Tuesday 6 November, he finally did.

"When faced with a crisis pregnancy, women need caring and support for themselves and their unborn children. They do not need to be terrorized with the fear of abandonment or rejection of themselves and their unborn children. Abortion is the physical and deliberate death of the unborn child and means the unspeakable emotional trauma for the grieving mother", explained Father Euteneuer. "Moreover, the facts are clear about how the pro-abortion network has engaged in other documented acts of murder and terror:"

Documented examples of such acts of terror include:

* pro-abortionist Laverne Ward killed Debra Evans and her 10-year-old daughter and then hacked the unborn child out of her body. He then kidnapped and stabbed her 7-year-old son Joshua to death. He was convicted on three counts of first-degree murder.

* pro-abortion activist Eileen Janezic shot and killed pro-life minister Jerry Simon at his home and then held police at bay for hours while shouting quotes from Anton LaVey's Satanic Bible out the window.

* abortionist Alicia Hanna killed Angela S?nchez, a 27-year-old mother of four children, then stuffed the woman's body into the trunk of her car while Ms. S?nchez's children were watching.

"In total, abortionists and their supporters have committed 78 acts of murder, 409 assaults, 505 sex crimes, 293 hate crimes and threats of violence and a frightening 1083 medical crimes", added Father Euteneuer. "Violence against innocent human life breeds more violence. If we are going to fight terror in our nation we should begin by protecting all life from conception to natural death."

"For years, pro-abortionists have been demanding that all pro-life groups apologize profusely for the shooting of abortionists by specific individuals, even when these pro-life groups had absolutely nothing to do with the murders. Human Life International demands that all pro-abortion groups apologize for the massive violence committed by abortion supporters across the nation over the last three decades and that these acts of violence cease immediately," concluded Father Euteneuer.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPERS BEWARE OF MUSIC GROUPS THAT SUPPORT ABORTION INDUSTRY

WASHINGTON, November 20, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Rock For Life, a division of American Life League, is asking music buyers to be aware of what they are supporting with their purchases this Christmas season. Consumers are urged not to purchase music from artists who help raise money and generate support for the abortion industry.

"Most people don't know where their money goes or what these bands support," said Bryan Kemper, director of Rock For Life. "Some of the most popular bands support the abortion industry by playing at fundraising concerts or donating their music for compilation CDs that benefit the pro- abortion cause."

Rock For Life has compiled lists of musicians who support and oppose the abortion industry. The list of pro-abortion bands includes groups such as the Dave Matthews Band, Barenaked Ladies, Ani DiFranco, and many more.

The pro-life list includes Third Day, Relient K, Jennifer Knapp, and many others.

Families Are Antidote to Sexual Exploitation, John Paul II Says Addresses Thai Bishops on "Ad Limina" Visit

VATICAN CITY, NOV. 16, 2001 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II proposed that the best antidote to sexual exploitation in Thailand is to support families.

The Pontiff articulated his proposal when he met with Thailand´s bishops at the end of their once-every-five-year "ad limina" visit to the Vatican. Thailand is one of the principal Asian locales of so-called sexual tourism. Along with Burma and Cambodia, it has the largest proportion of AIDS patients in Southeast Asia, according to a recent U.N. report. "Since the family is the foundation of society and the place where people first learn the values that will guide them through life, it has to have a special place in your pastoral program," the Pope told the bishops. The Holy Father proposed that in "every diocese an active family apostolate should aim at ensuring that parents and children are helped to live their vocation according to the mind of Christ, and that couples in interreligious marriages receive the help they need to avoid any weakening of faith." Lastly, the Pontiff appealed for commitment on the part of the Thai Catholic laity and the national and local authorities to support the family. The family, he said, "is under threat from various forms of materialism and from widespread offenses against human dignity, such as the scourge of abortion and the sexual exploitation of women and children."

PRO-ABORTION CONFERENCE IN MEXICO CAUSES UPROAR

CUERNAVACA, Mexico, (LSN.ca/CWNews.com) - A contentious global pro-abortion conference sponsored by the Population Council and the Alan Guttmacher Institute in predominantly Catholic Mexico has elicited outrage from local officials and citizens.

On Monday health officials from 20 Latin American countries kicked off a regional conference on abortion. The three day conference, with some 250 delegates in attendance, aims to help "Latin American governments establish 'a free exchange of ideas' about the possible legalization of abortion."

Previous coverage failed to mention the sponsorship of the Population Council and the Guttmacher Institute, US-based pro-abortion groups, and listed only the sponsorship of Mexico's National Institute of Health.

Hundreds of demonstrators protested outside the meeting in Cuernavaca in the Mexican state of Morelos. The local pro-life group set up an alternative pro-life conference attended by thousands. At the pro-life meeting, a representative of the governor of the state of Morelos, Sergio Estrada Cajigal, declared Morelos a "state in favor of life to protect it in all its stages." Several political and religious leaders attended the pro-life conference.

POPE CALLS THAILAND BISHOPS TO PRO-LIFE EFFORTS "IN EVERY DIOCESE"

VATICAN, November 16, 2001 (LSN.ca) - In an address to the Bishop's of Thailand today, Pope John Paul II called them to have "in every diocese an active family apostolate" where "fresh efforts must be constantly made" to address the "scourge of abortion".

John Paul said, "The family is under threat from various forms of materialism and from widespread offences against human dignity, such as the scourge of abortion and the sexual exploitation of women and children." He stressed that "Fresh efforts must be constantly made in your local communities to meet these difficulties." He also did not shy away from political action urging the bishops to "train the lay faithful to carry out their specific mission in the temporal order, in every area of political, economic, social and cultural life."

CLONING EXPERT CALLS FOR DEBATE ON ETHICS OF TECHNIQUE

LONDON, Nov 12, 01 (CWNews.com) - One of the creators of Dolly the cloned sheep has called for an independent inquiry into the ethics of human cloning before the theory becomes reality.

Dr. Harry Griffin, assistant director of the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, was part of the team which created Dolly in 1996. But he has been embroiled in a war of words with Italian fertility expert Severino Antinori, who has claimed he will produce the first cloned human within a year.

Griffin says it is time the debate on human cloning shifted from arguments over the dangers posed by the technology to the rights of children who might be created by the technique. Griffin told the newspaper Scotland on Sunday, "It is time that an independent body made up of experts conducted a systematic review of the evidence for and against."

He added that the debate over the shortcomings of cloning technology at the moment had to be followed by an ethical assessment of the process. "It may be that the technology will improve to the point where some might consider it to be safe. In the intervening period we need to produce a clear view and organize our arguments against cloning more clearly than they are now," he said.

Griffin added that it was vital that the inquiry took the rights of any future cloned children into account: "If their identity is compromised by cloning then that is of great importance."

VATICAN DOCUMENT CONDEMNS UNITED NATIONS REFUGEE HEALTH MANUAL

VATICAN, November 8, 2001 (LSN.ca) - The Vatican released an official document today condemning a United Nations field manual on reproductive health for refugees. The Vatican document, "The Reproductive Health of Refugees" slammed the United Nations document for promoting "irresponsible sexual relationships and even abortion." The 241-page field guide was published in 1999 by the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), written in collaboration with the World Health Organization, the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) and some Non-Governmental Organizations.

The Vatican document, sent to bishops' conference around the world, said the manual "has created moral and intellectual confusion" and is "utilitarian and neo-Malthusian." The Vatican accuses the field manual of falsely presenting the "morning after pill" as if it were a contraceptive when in fact it is abortifacient. According to the Vatican, the manual encourages "the separation between sexuality and procreation through the promotion of a 'non-judgmental' attitude on extramarital relationships and homosexuality."

"Instead of being educated in true love, of marriage and future family life, these boys and girls are introduced to the world of individualistic and irresponsible sexual pleasure that increases the risk of the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic," says the Vatican.

NEW SMALL POX VACCINE MAY USE ABORTED FETAL CELL LINE

WASHINGTON, November 5, 2001 (LSN.ca) - Children of God For Life, the Internet's most reliable source for information on vaccines tainted by the use of aborted baby tissue in their manufacture, has warned that a new Smallpox vaccine may use aborted fetal cell lines.

A contract for development of a new smallpox vaccine was awarded to the Oravax/Acambis Corporation. The pro-life group checked the proposed ingredients through the CDC and found the company intends to use aborted fetal cell line MRC-5 as the cell substrate for growing the virus. The group also notes that animal substitutes exist to create the smallpox vaccine.

The FDA verified the reports in a phone call from Children of God for Life, according to a news release from the group. The FDA also said they would most likely use more than one manufacturer and no final decisions have been made. Testing has already begun using MRC-5 in Phase 1 smallpox vaccine trials.

Children of God for Life urges pro-lifers to express their concerns over the use of aborted fetal tissue in vaccines, and urge the use of alternatives. "Consider the outcome if the only vaccine we have next year is derived from aborted fetal tissue and hundreds of thousands of Americans refuse it," says the group.

An official Centers for Disease Control document verifies that "Recently, MRC-5 was used as a cell substrate for the preparation of an experimental smallpox vaccine under a Phase 1 trial." See the CDC document:
